School History
Scoil Naisiunta Na Carraige
Carrig School was built in 1914 and opened as a co-ed school in 1915. At the time it was a two teacher school. In 1963 an extension was added to the school which included a third classroom, toilets and cloakroom. A water tower and outdoor shelter were also built.
Further extensions in 1981 and 1983 gave the school a fourth classroom and a general purpose room. The numbers continued to increase and there are now 232 pupils enrolled in the school.
The first part of our major new extension and refurbishment project was completed in March 2017 when teachers and pupils moved into their new classrooms. Phase two of the project was finished in late 2017. This included refurbishment of the original school building and play areas including a dedicated soft play area for infants and two astro-turf pitches. On December 8th 2017 Alan Kelly T.D. officially opened the building.
This new building that you are enjoying today is a direct result of the hard work of the Principal Mairéad O’Halloran, former Principal Liam Maloney, and the dedicated Board of Management at that time. In the past 111 years there has been huge changes in society, in education and consequently in the school. The history of the school is interwoven with the life of the local community and parish.
In 2006 Mairéad O’Halloran became the Principal of Carrig N.S. She was a Príomhoide with a strong presence and a heart that embraced her staff, pupils and parents. Mairéads passing on Jan 6th 2022, after a brief illness, was a huge loss to our school community. D’éalaigh Mairéad uainn ar an lá suntasach sin, Nollaig na mBan. B’shin lá a thóg na mná sos ón obair, agus b’shin an lá a roghnaigh Dia do Mhairéad sos a thógaint agus an saol seo a fhágaint.
The Modular Classroom, now a home also to our afterschools Programme was opened in December 2023.
The Board of Management work tirelessly to maintain and develop the school in order to meet the needs of all of our pupils.
Perry Maloney is currently the Principal of Carrig NS and Laura Boland is Deputy Principal.
