We, as a school, decided it would be a fantastic initiative to promote physical activity amongst our pupils and staff. An Active Schools Committee, which included pupils from different class levels and staff members, Mr. Prout and Mc Bergin, was formed to overlook the efforts to gain our first flag. We have had many committees over the last number of years and whilst Covid times meant we hit a pause on our application for the flag, we were very proud to have gained our first Active Flag which was raised on the 13th June. Carrig held a busy and enjoyable Active Schools Week last week which included our first ‘Carrig Grand National’ complete with pool noodle ponies, obstacle courses and a competitive ‘World Cup Soccer Blitz’. We welcomed back past pupil, Sam O’Farrell to celebrate his amazing achievement of captaining Tipperary to the U20 All Ireland win. We finished off the week by welcoming back special guest and past pupil Sinéad Meagher to present our Active Schools committee with their certificates and do the honour of raising our flag. We were thrilled to have Sinead, who captained Tipperary to victory in the All-Ireland Junior Final 2024 and World Handball Champion, back to celebrate with us as we are very proud of her sporting achievements. She made a lovely speech before raising the flag, encouraging our pupils to continue playing sports and being active. The journey to gaining our first Active Flag has truly been a team effort, reflecting our school’s motto,’ Ní neart go cur le Chéile’ – ‘There is no strength without unity’.

Active Flag

We celebrated raising our first Active Flag on Friday 13th June as part of our Active Schools Week 2025 celebrations. The Active School Flag is awarded to schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community and we are thrilled to have achieved this goal in Carrig. The journey towards gaining our schools first Active Flag began in September 2017.
